"The Fox and the Grapes"
One afternoon a fox was walking through the forest and spotted a bunch of grapes hanging from over a lofty branch.
"Just the thing to quench my thirst," quoth he.
Taking a few steps back, the fox jumped and just missed the hanging grapes. Again the fox took a few paces back and tried to reach them but still failed.
Finally, giving up, the fox turned up his nose and said, "They're probably sour anyway," and proceeded to walk away.

The fox represents a very common human digression that takes place when new information does not correlate with currently-held beliefs.

Carlo Collodi
"Pinocchio"
After starting to turn in to a donkey (exemplifying his identification with his material self), Pinocchio goes home to find an empty house and Geppetto swallowed by a giant whale.
Pinocchio jumps in to the water himself and gets swallowed by the whale in order to find his Creator.
This exemplifies the escape from the darkness of ignorant (profane) life and gain spiritual light.
This sequence is allegory to the story of Jonah and the Whale. The fish is a symbol of evil and represents darkness of ignorance which engulfs man when he is thrown over the side of the ship (is born) in to the sea (life).
Pinocchio goes in to the darkness to find his Creator and ultimately embrace his higher self.
***********************************
Pinocchio represents the human experience in it's most general sense. Pinocchio emerges as a real boy which can be said to represent the embodiment of illumination that occurred as an affect of leaving his material life after emerging from the fish (with his Creator).
